In a nod to the older Nikkor lenses, Voigtlander did it right with this lens. Quality metal construction, etched numbering and even a scalloped focusing ring. Add the integrated CPU and support for 3D Matrix metering and the lens is top notch. I have owned this lens twice. Sold it the first time because I thought I had too many lenses in this focal range but ended up missing it. In a way it was better that I did sell it since in between time of owning them Voigtlander changed the focusing ring from a rubber grip to the metal scalloped grip.

Like most fast lenses, this lens has some veiling flare under certain lighting conditions when shooting wide open. By f/2 it is gone. With that said, I typically use the lens wide open, especially when I know I want the final result to be in black and white. Below are a couple pictures of the lens. As a tribute to the original 5.8cm f/1.4 from Nikon, I shot these two pictures using that lens and a Nikon K1 extension ring on the Nikon Df.

    Thanks,

    George

  • Here are some photos using the Nokton on a Df. All shot @ f/1.4
Like I said in my original post, I love this lens for B/W rendering.

Has there been any interest in a Forum topic under MF Glass that would include other manufactures of MF Glass (Zeiss, Voigtlander, etc). Like the "Alt AF Glass for Nikon" forum topic?

What was your focus distance? Reason I ask, at least on my monitor there is very little detail/sharpness in the distant trees.

Especially for people interested in video. From what I read the Sony is great at video. The 50-300 is my standard lens for event video when I am shooting from a tripod and not having to move around. I will have to share a picture of my "Frankenrig" with that lens over in the lens forum. :)

Thanks for sharing all of your findings Mark.

Here is an interesting article from B&H Photo. It was written before the A7RII came out, but gives some insight to which Sony best handles RF glass. Looks like the A7S is the model to look at for shooting vintage lenses.

Do you only enter the focal length for a given lens and do not enter max aperture? By no lens register do you mean that it does not have the ability to remember lens settings like the 9 Non-CPU settings on the Nikons?

Looking forward to your shots and how IBIS works in real life scenarios. As a fellow D810 user, I would love your take on the video capability. I really only use my D810 for video lately and growing more annoyed with the lack of focus peaking on that body. Means I have to take an auxiliary monitor to each event.

Edit: wanted to clarify that the camera the person has is not the R version, just the A7 II. Sorry about that. Alphabet soup names. Like the new Nikon lenses ;)

But seriously, it is a fun lens to use. But it does make you slow down and follow each step until you get used to it. I have the original manual with good instructions and application scenarios. I am going to scan and print a copy to include with the lens as it is sent out. I will also post a copy here in the next couple days.

The great thing about digital, is aside from the initial cost of the camera, it costs nothing to practice. So if anyone is feeling hesitant because they have not used a shift lens before, sign up for the project and give it a try :)

    Mark,

Do you want me to post a picture of the lens. This lens is definitely not a mount, point and shoot type. Since it is all manual settings and stop down metering it can be challenging and frustrating. But it will make you slow down and plan your shots. I have the original manual and will include a scanned copy of it if this lens is selected.

For final voting just wanted to include a photo of the PC-NIKKOR 28mm 1:3.5 that is offered as a "Nikko" candidate. It is a perspective control lens that offers shift and rotation function of the lens. Unlike the newer PC-E Nikon lenses this one does not have a tilt function. The photo here is of the actual lens and HN-9 hood that would be used.

Well out of the list of lenses, there is only one I don't have, so will cast only one vote.

Nikkor 135 F/2.8 QC From rolubich - I have the Q version and would be interesting in doing a side by side with the QC.

The 50-300 excels at video. It is my go to set up for event videography where I need variable focal lengths and am restricted from my shooting location.

The 5.8cm has a unique rendering that my other lens just don't have. Here is an example using the 5.8cm with the Nikon K Extension Rings. This one using the Df with the K2+K3+K4 rings (20.8mm extension).
