Browsed through all the topics and didn't come across anything on this superb medium telephoto manual Nikkor. The f/2 max aperture at that focal length makes for some delicious backgrounds.

Happy to have my 135 back in use. Cloudy day but still not a bad time to use it with my D700.

After about two and a half weeks in the repair queue, my 135/2's infinity focus issues have been fixed (a ball bearing replacement being the key here)! So I photographed it next to what I feel are its two sibling lenses, the 180/2.8 AI-S ED and the 105/1.8 AI-S.

A couple of photos of my best friend Dan on his guitar. Good example of what the 135/2 is capable of with my full frame D700

I used it a bit with my Nikon EM at the races too:

The 135 is quite an awesome lens! See if you can reply now, made a change to see if it fixes it!

Thanks! I really cannot get enough of the sharpness and image quality I get out of the 135. I feel like the stubby shape + fast aperture of the 135/2 AI puts it in a similar category to its big brother the 180/2.8 and its little brother, the 105/1.8 (which I got to test out this week).

Excellent work Chris with the 135 f2. The purple aberration is part of the package. The lens is super for all kinds of events.

Finally got to try the 135/2 in the environment I REALLY was hoping to test it with...night time auto racing!

(Also used the 135/2.8 AI-converted, the 75-150 Series E zoom, and my other manual focus workhorses like the 50/1.4 Nikkor-S and the 28/3.5 AI)

https://www.flickr.com/photos/csampang/albums/72157676158427826

Some purple fringing in brightly lit spots...

Once I stopped down a bit, it wasn't as much of an issue:
https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5571/30199984913_ba97de36e0_c.jpgDSC_0147c by Chris Sampang, on Flickr

But where the 135 shined (after a bit of tweaking of my prefocus points) was in the area before the track's first turn, where the cars are severely backlit as they passed by me. Since I was facing the much less lit side of the vehicles, that f/2 aperture was handy!

And in the rare opportunity I got to shoot at ISO 200, things came out pretty well:

I'm hoping to test out the 135 at a sprint car race this Saturday (if the weather cooperates) and test being able to use it as a low-light night motorsports lens. Years ago I used my 135/2.8 (Nikkor-Q, home AI conversion) and 180/2.8 AI-S ED-IF for that kinda thing and the 135 was alright but not ultra spectacular, so I'm wondering if the 135/2 will be a noticeable improvement.

Yeah, of the teleconverters I've used, the Nikon TC-201 is definitely very sharp - and this is an example with haze on one of the glass elements! Yet even that is superior to my Nikon TC-16A and on a completely different universe compared to the $10 Kenko 2x teleconverter I've used a little bit about seven years ago. I've paired the TC-201 with the 135/2, 75-150/3.5 Series E, and 100/2.8 Series E with great results.

My most common usage of the lens is at events and concerts or other situations where the subject is not so far away. That's its strength, as you are discovering. I have never tried it with a TC, looks impressive with it too!

You're welcome!

After having had it for about a month...I can say it really shines at portrait distances and with people photos in general, something about skin tone rendering just really works here.

Towards infinity I find the results aren't quite as phenomenal as the medium-to-portrait distances and I've seen one comment elsewhere on the web concurring with this. I don't know if it's just a natural feature of the manual focus 135/2 or if it's an infinity calibration thing that can be fixed at some point.

This cute Nikon teddy bear is located at a local camera shop.

And here's a result with the 135 paired with my TC-201 teleconverter, very very sharp (had the 135 stopped down to f/4, plus the added TC). Still wondering why a gas station has a giant ice cream cone on its canopy!

Very nice portrait of your uncle! This lens is a gem, it comes through in tough lighting conditions.

From earlier today, 135 f2 AI and D800
