The copy I have is excellent, very similar in size and length to the later and more common 180 2.8 ED AIS, but this older lens (this particular copy manufactured likely around 1972 or 1973) has a scalloped aperture ring, and a focus ring with the cross-hatched design.

It only has 7 aperture blades, but the bokeh has been very pleasing (at least to me). Haven't done any testing, but I suspect the sharpness is not too far behind that of the later ED AIS version.

Here's some samples.

Wide open.

Updating the thread for this lens. I also need to do a picture of this lens, side by side with the 180 ED AIS.

At last week's auto show in Washington DC. The 180 2.8 P Auto lens wide open on Nikon Df.

Well this superb but unheralded lens deserves yet another sample. This time taking in a soccer game, with the Df.

For some reason when I saw this butterfly today I thought of the 180 2.8 P lens. Maybe I associate the lens with the butterfly? And could it be the same butterfly individual a month later, with spots more developed?

Butterfly bokeh at f/4 on the Df. Haven't used the 180 2.8 AIS yet since I got hold of this older 180!

Nice series here Somy! I love listening to jazz. From the looks of it, this lens performs quite nicely with the Df. Thanks for sharing these with us!

This lens continues to be my mid-range telephoto favorite, beating out even the 135 f2 recently.

All of these are with the lens wide open on the Nikon Df.

The fur on that squirrel is as sharp with this lens as its teeth! :) And love the separation/background in the 2nd to last image. What a hidden gem of a lens, glad you got a wonderful copy too Mark!
